Naturally found on sand dunes so sandy, hot, drought conditions don't phase it a bit. The leaves are succulent and have a mild salty taste. Good as a fresh eating or cooking green. I have found these to be incredibly difficult to germinate. I usually just sow a whole ton of seeds into my beds then forget about them and plant other things. These are grown primarily for their tops and can live for many years in the garden. When it gets too big just dig up, separate them, and replant. I like to tuck them in and around other plants in my herb garden for extra texture and height. No need to protect from frost. Onions can be delicate from seed, so start them in a protected location in trays then pot up and harden off as they grow.

Packet: ~450 seeds

Good to start from seed in these months:

North Florida: August-December

Central Florida: August-December

South Florida: October-December

Picked young they are great for salads or pizzas. These are too large to trellis so I like to plant at the corners of my raised beds and then let them crawl out and along the ground from there. Since not trellised, ground boring pests can be a problem. Elevate off the ground to prevent them from ruining your fruit. I like to wrap the stems in foil to prevent squash vine borers.
