Most gardeners plant what sounds exciting in September and then spend January either drowning in kale or wishing they'd planted more tomatoes. Sound familiar? The problem usually isn't the growing — it's the planning that happened before the first seed ever went in the ground.
In this 2-hour hands-on workshop, we're going to work backwards from your dinner table to your garden bed. Think of it like writing a grocery list before you go to the store — except the store is your backyard, and we're figuring out exactly what needs to be on that list and how much of it you actually need.
You'll leave with a clear, personalized picture of how much of any given crop your household actually consumes, how to translate that into a real plant count, and how to honestly assess what you can grow in your space versus what makes more sense to source locally. We'll dig into the math for fresh eating AND preserving — because canning sauce and drying tomatoes changes the numbers more than most people expect.
This is a working class. Bring your questions, your garden sketches if you have them, and your honest answers about what your family actually eats. Worksheets and a copy of The Urban Harvest Grow Cheat Sheet are included. No experience required — just a willingness to think critically about what goes on your plate and where it comes from.
We are offering this course on a sliding price scale so that everyone is able to access this resource regardless of their financial situation. The sliding scale represents the idea that monetary resources like income should not be the only determining factor in whether or not someone can access services/classes/etc. Take a look at the green bottles image in the product images to help determine where you fall on the sliding scale (image created & shared freely by Alexis J. Open Pollinated Heirloom Seeds Selected To Thrive
This is a curated collection of seeds I have found to grow well in Florida over the years. It is designed to take the overwhelm and thought process out of figuring out which varieties to select that will actually grow well here.
Some of the seed is saved from myself and other small local growers for harder to source varieties that you can't find online.
The majority of the seed varieties will come from dedicated seed supply companies like Working Food or Southern Exposure Seed Exchange to keep up with demand. We always prioritize localized seed sources which have a sustainable and equitable business model.
